Well, actually...

Cloudflare was actually not down Friday morning? My bad.

I goofed. Maybe. Who knows? We'll do it live!

Cloudflare went down sometime Thursday night, apparently (and according to Reddit), not this morning when I decided to get my ass up and join the waking world on a rainy Friday. So I actually don't know if Fancaps uses Cloudflare or not, as I implied in my previous post. It doesn't appear to, but I could be wrong. I just live here and say things.

But my point still stands.

WeeMadHamish responding to my query about Cloudflare being down: "ayep. I think the blurb I saw was that they attempted to mitigate a very niche vulnerability by (checks notes) nuking it from orbit."

Relying on just one company/thing for the majority of something is a bad idea, especially for something as global as the Internet. We should have learned this lesson when AWS choked about two months ago. Amber Carlson said:

The more we rely on centralized cloud platforms such as AWS, the more we share in their risk. The scale of this week’s disruption shows just how much of the internet depends on a few key providers. While AWS has strong and reliable overall, no system—no matter how advanced—is immune to failure.

And from Futurism's Joe Wilkins:

It’s true: the event raises major red flags about the concentration of power held by megacorporations — and their financial interest in keeping it that way.

Monopolies BAD! Decentralization GOOD!

Play the clip: How many times we have to teach you this lesson, old man!?

I was not going somewhere with this.

Here some stuff I checked out while the Internet was fixed!

And uh, yep. That's about it. When I'm not just devouring The Expanse novels I just cycle between the two social media communities I'm in and post wild shit. But I saw I had some extra inertia and decided to post once again before fucking off into the sunset.

Depression sucks. But this too shall pass.

I'll see y'all later.

...omfg Fancaps is amazing where has this been all my meme life?

no ai webring previous random next a bluegreen rectangle showing the words the NO AI webring, with NO AI being written by a fountain pen, all in the style of 16 bit Windows 95 icons. to either side are two equally Windows-95-style cursors pointing left and right, softly bouncing up and down. in between it all is a small black question mark
