30. The One Allergy I (don't) Have
Now I am hungry for oysters...
For the longest time, I thought I was allergic to oysters. Not shellfish in general, but oysters specifically. I was young when I had them for the first time... and they made me so sick I was convinced that I was allergic to them.
Whenever a health partitioner asked me if I had any allergies, I was always like "well... there was this time oysters made me really sick... so I guess that? Maybe?"
In my thin defense, there are two different types of shellfish. Food Allergy lists "crustaceans (such as shrimp, prawns, crab and lobster) and mollusks/bivalves (such as clams, mussels, oysters, scallops, octopus, squid, abalone, snail)" separately. So, I could've eaten all the crab I wanted (and I did)... but I also still ate calamari and scallops. The math wasn't really mathin', as the kids say.
And it turns out, they were just cooked incorrectly. That was food poisoning.
Still, it took me a few more years to actually try them. But I did eventually, and I really enjoy an oyster now! Most of the time, raw. With a lot of horseradish. Turns out, I really enjoy the (lack of) texture.
